President Yahya Jammeh declares the Gambia an Islamic Republic!

Gambia's President Yahya Jammeh declared his country an Islamic republic in a move he said was designed to distance the West African state from its colonial past.

Mr. Jammeh on state Television said his proclamation was "In line with the country's religious identity and values. "As Muslims are the majority (over 90%)  in the country, the Gambia cannot afford to continue the colonial legacy," he added. He added that no dress code would be imposed and citizens of other faiths would be allowed to practice freely.

Yahya Abdul-Aziz Jemus Junkung Jammeh has been president of the tiny West African country for 21 years. In 2013 he withdrew the Gambia from the commonwealth, describing the organization as neo-colonial.
